Hi to everyone!
We are a group of master's students from the course of Biological Data Mining at the University of Trento.

We are investigating Human-specific genes and linked diseases. These genes represent a subset of genes that can be found only in humans and that are not found in our close relatives, the chimpanzee. There have been studies to identify these genes and understand their role in our development and their connection to diseases and tumor formation. At the moment, it is a field yet to be completely discovered and needs further analysis.

In our project, we decided to focus on the role of human-specific genes in the context of Acute Lymphoid Leukemia (ALL), a type of liquid tumor that is highly common in children (80% of the patients are less than 18 years old). We specifically identified 122 human-specific genes up and down-regulated in this disease.

We generated our dataset by merging different cohorts. We utilized/combined five different cohorts that group samples from pediatric and adult cases of ALL plus adult and pediatric controls. We have a total of 670 samples, of which 30 are controls. For each sample, we have a total of 13155 genes, all characterized by their gene name.

Our final objective is to expand the network and if possible infer casual relationships to be able to define new genes of interest in terms of ALL and human-specific genes. We hope that the obtained info could be useful to define, if possible, known drugs and treatments that could be used to specifically target these genes and that could have clinical relevance.

A parte tutto, ma Valter potrebbe farsi vivo (sia sul forum interno del progetto, ma anche qui) per spiegare il futuro prossimo e/o remoto del progetto?

Credo che sia un segno di rispetto, dopo che ha detto che il progetto sarebbe ripartito "at the beginning of August".

"Just a very brief update: People here are working on submitting papers, analyzing the FANTOM and Vitis vinifera data and so on. A nice Web application to look and play with the results is almost ready. Unfortunately there is yet no ETA on the new experiments to be done here.

Per ora nessuna novità sulle wu, ma sono in arrivo delle pubblicazioni e una web application. Inoltre i ricercatori stanno lavorando sui dati di fantom e di vitis vinifera. Insomma si sta comunque lavorando sul progetto.

Sembra ci sia un pò di lavoro.

We just started two experiments (gene expansion) on two different datasets (rnaseq, riboseq). There will be a total of about 140k workunits (2x tasks), each one relatively fast, distributed in batches.

A sorpresa un bel messaggio del buon Valter

Just a ping to state that the project is alive and running.
The last year I was way too optimistic in forecasting that a big new experiment would have started soon. I was wrong, in the last months just a handful of workunits were distributed. Anyway, even in this strange and hot summer, the scientists are working, and the project is making progress, although we cannot say when new job will be available.
BTW, if you want to check something we did recently, although still in beta stage, just go to onegene-causality-weaver.disi.unitn.it/

Circa 9000 WU in corso, si sta muovendo qualcosa? Arriveranno nuovi batch a breve? Valter rispondi!!!

per ora solo questo batch, per una analisi molto puntuale, il futuro è ancora avvolto nella nebbia

Unfortunately, there is nothing to report right now. The BOINC server is up and running, waiting for input from the scientists, but there is no news at this time. Thank you for your patience.
The biologists are still working on the results obtained in the past. I’ll keep you updated when some papers are published.
