You know what they say about rabbits? Well, we hope it's the same for primes during this Challenge. Come join us as we propagate the Top 5000 list with a litter of kits….I mean, a bunch of primes! It's a GREAT opportunity for you to find a prime for yourself! Who knows, there may even be the rare Fermat number divisor.

A 3 day Challenge is being offered on PrimeGrid's Proth Prime Search (LLR) application.

To participate in the Challenge, please select only the Proth Prime Search (LLR) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. The challenge will begin 3 February 2011 18:00 UTC and end 6 February 2011 18:00 UTC. Application builds are available for Linux 32 bit, Windows 32 bit and MacIntel. These applications will be sent to 64 bit clients. As with all LLR application projects, there is no advantage of 64 bit over 32 bit.

Benvenuti al Challenge della giornata mondiale della Matematica

World Maths Day - a day to promote numeracy through games and competition. It has been created for students aged 4 – 18 years with the addition for the first time this year of an adult category, ages 19 to 119. Only students in the 4 to 18 age categories are eligible for prizes. Adults just get to join in the fun! Compete against others around the world in live games of mental arithmetic.

This year's goal is 1 billion correct answers...a very ambitious goal considering last year's total was just under 480 million correct.

Come join the fun and register...there's no charge. Participate and compare your scores to others. NOTE: Actual start time of World Maths Day is 28 Feb 11:00 UTC and will last for 48 hours til 2 Mar 11:00 UTC.

In onore della Giornata Mondiale della Matematica, PrimeGrid offre un Challenge di 24 ore su The Problem Riesel (Sieve) .

Per partecipare al Challenge, si prega di selezionare solo le TRP (Sieve), nelle preferenze di Primegrid. La sfida inizia 1 Marzo 2011 19:00 e finisce il 2 Mar 2011 19:00 . Applicationi disponibili per MacIntel, Linux 32 e 64 bit e Windows a 32 bit e 64.


Recommendation: The TRP (Sieve) application requires a one time download of a 32.4MB sieve file. Please consider running a few TRP (Sieve) WU's before the Challenge begins so your client will already have the sieve file. This way, bandwidth can be used to deliver WU's instead of the sieve file. Thank you!

Welcome to the Marie-Sophie Germain Challenge

Marie-Sophie Germain was born on April 1, 1776, in Paris, France. She was an extraordinary "French mathematician who made important contributions to the fields of differential geometry and number theory and to the study of Fermat's Last Theorem." (Wiki)

Because of the gender prejudices of the time, her early work was submitted under the pseudonym of M. LeBlanc. Later work was finally submitted under her own name and on 8 January 1816, she became the first woman to win a prize from the Paris Academy of Sciences. While some consider her work lacking in rigor, almost all agree that it was from the lack of a formal education that was denied to her based on her gender.
The modern view generally acknowledges that although Sophie had great talent as a mathematician, her haphazard education had left her without the strong base she needed to truly excel. Louis Bucciarelli and Nancy Dworsky, Germain's biographers, summarize as follows: “All the evidence argues that Sophie Germain had a mathematical brilliance that never reached fruition due to a lack of rigorous training available only to men."(Wiki)
What better way to pay tribute to Sophie Germain than to find a prime with her namesake. Finding a World Record Sophie Germain prime would be incredible and even more amazing if it was found during the Challenge. Hey, it's possible. NOTE: A twin prime is also possible in this search because of the quad sieve.

While the Sophie Gemain prime remains elusive, a byproduct of the search are single primes. The last SGS (LLR) Challenge found over 100 of these. We expect about the same this time around.
